2003 VLA Trip

Last October, my wife and I decided we'd drive out to the VLA for a day trip. While this technically isn't a Miata Club outing, I guess we both own Miatas. Therefore, two Miata drivers = club outing! hehe. Really, I just wanted to post these pix.

The Very Large Array (or VLA) is one of the worlds largest astronomical radio observatories. More info can be found here. It's a great drive. I highly recommend it.

You'll notice the antenna is turning. We pulled off the road to park and the dish started making funny noises. I thought they were coming to take us away. Really, it was just doing a sweep of the sky along with the other 50-some dishes scattered throughout the desert. The VLA was in its wide Y-configuration, so no better shots were anywhere to be taken.

The road to nowhere is actually the road off the main highway to the VLA observatory. In the entire time we were parked, only one truck drove past. I decided to take the opportunity to capture this shot. I'd seen a similar one in a magazine years ago and always wanted one. He looks pretty good with Bucky's 2001 15" wheels, doesn't he? We figured we'd try to burn up some of the crappy tire that came with Bucky via the road trip. By the looks of the rubber and the 400 treadwear rating printed on the side, we've got a lot of road trips left to take...
